In the 1980s, Channel 4 produced a series of programmes called Out of Town and Old Country featuring TV presenter and writer Jack Hargreaves. In this programme Chub Fishing, Jack talks about the book The Compleat Angler and with the help of his friend Dave Swallow shows how Izaak Walton caught the famous Chub with a spot on his tail using a pole. Apart from chub, Jack and Dave go on to catch roach and dace.

With his knowledge and love of the countryside, Hargreaves’ easy going presentation style enthralled both rural and urban viewers alike. This unsentimental record of a bygone time set the bar high for all “country matters” series that were to follow in its footsteps.
